CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Neither of the McCarthys was enthused about Jemma’s suggestion to go up the mountain after dark to talk to an old woman who lived alone and was deemed a dangerous witch by many of the locals.

Jemma presented the argument that those who were afraid of Mrs. Eloise Brickellwood didn’t know her, and she did. Still, she was also wary of the drive up the mountain in the dark. She tried to shake it off, but after hearing Val’s story about the boo hag, she felt like a little girl waiting for monsters to come out from under her bed.

To Jemma’s surprise, Easter was the most nervous about the plan. Val jumped in to help Jemma convince her to go with them. “She’s the only one who won’t think we’re crazy. We have to try.” Val gave Jemma a pleading look. “At least, I hope that’s the case.”

Jemma tried to appear confident and cleared her throat. “Either Mama B is a misunderstood old lady, or we’re going to visit someone who might know what this supernatural mystery is about. It can’t hurt, either way.”

Finally, Easter relented, but she appeared anxious during the drive up the mountain. Val clutched the steering wheel. The higher they went on the winding road, the more static overpowered the music on the radio. Eventually, Val had to switch the radio off, which left the three of them sitting with only the howling wind outside to sing to them. They had the heat on in the truck, but Jemma still felt cold.

The beater truck was growling when they reached the top of the hill. Val pulled to a stop, and Jemma opened the back door. Instantly, she knew something was wrong. She sensed it before she saw them. Through the trees, blue and red lights flashed. The dirt road showed signs of multiple vehicles having gone up the slope ahead of them.

“What the hell is going on?” Val muttered as he stepped out of the driver’s side of the truck.

“I don’t know,” Jemma answered, her voice shaking.

Easter tried to say something, but what came was a whimper.

Val started forward. Easter’s voice croaked to call him back. Curiosity overcame Jemma, though, and she gripped Easter’s hand. “Together,” she whispered. Once they were through the trees and had stopped in front of the old, faded sign for Gran’s Rest, they saw a sheriff’s truck, two patrol cars, and the local ambulance, which wasn’t an actual ambulance but a modified full-sized van with lights on top.

“No!” Jemma rasped. Her cry didn’t carry very far. She started forward. What happened to Mama B? Was she hurt? She looked at the ambulance van, which was open. She didn’t see anyone inside it, so she scanned the scene. When her eyes landed on the porch, she was relieved to see the venerable old woman talking to the sheriff while swatting away a pair of paramedics.

They’re checking her for injuries! Jemma realized. Fear and relief battled for dominance within her. Mama B looked unharmed for the most part.
